Dome Technology LLC - Idaho Falls

Barry South started Dome Technology, LLC in the 1970s using the technology to build monolithic concrete domes by spraying concrete to the inside of a pressurized, dome-shaped, fabric air form.

Barry and his brothers developed and patented the technology that Dome uses today to build concrete industrial and architectural dome structures up to 300 feet in diameter. Dome Technologies has built more than 400 domes in 44 states and 23 countries, or 75 percent of all concrete dome structures worldwide. They are primarily used for commodity storage, schools and churches.

Dome Technology experienced healthy growth until Sept. 11, 2001. At that time, Dome employed 135 people, but by May 2002 there were only 35 left. During that difficult period Dome sold many buildings at cost in order to survive, and they borrowed approximately $1 million to keep the business going. Today Dome Technology has rebounded, growing to 120 employees.

Dome Technology currently has eight projects under construction and contracts for 12 more, which may double or triple the annual sales of past years. The demand for dome structures is accelerating due to their efficiency, strength and lack of interior support beans. Plus, they are stronger pound per pound than almost any other structure type. The company is very well known internationally.

Barry has utilized the services of the Idaho Small Business Development Center over the years. Recently the Region 6 Idaho SBDC office helped place two student teams with Dome Technology to assist in finding and building an effective work force to meet expansion challenges.
