Kids Korner LLC - American Falls
A longtime resident of American Falls, Peggy Long recognized a growing need for a childcare facility in this small agricultural town. With agriculture in decline, many residents were seeking jobs in other industries. And as more and more women entered the work force to supplement family incomes, there arose a demand for childcare services beyond those provided by relatives or small in-home facilities.
Long, a manager for Farmland Grain, turned to the Idaho SBDC in Pocatello for assistance in making her vision for a professional childcare facility a reality. She needed help to construct a new building, with financing, employee recruitment, and understanding financial/accounting systems.
Peggy solved these problems with her characteristic grit and determination. Assisted by the Idaho SBDC, she defined her project and prepared a financing proposal for a local bank. Though initially declined by one lender, her proposal was eventually approved by another. The financing package included an SBA 504 loan with participation by Key Bank and the Eastern Idaho Development Corporation. Peggy worked with her banker to complete the building construction and install the required equipment.
After the startup in 2000, Peggy successfully overcame erratic enrollment during her first year and was able to adjust her operating expenses to match income levels. Starting strictly as a day care center, the business has expanded to include preschool services. Beyond the direct creation of jobs, Kids Korner has had a strong impact on the community. By providing high quality care for their children, Peggy makes it possible for a significant number of women to enter the work force knowing that their children will be well cared for.
